A&K's Anyella's Vineyards Wedding, Skaneateles, NY

Since, it's now November, and peak wedding season has come to a close, I thought it would be a good time to look back at a few weddings I didn't have time to blog about!

One such wedding that comes to mind, is the wedding of Allison and Kevan! They were married at St. Mary's church in Skaneatles, and since historic old church doesn't have a sound system, we were glad to provide the music for their beautiful ceremony. After the ceremony, guests convened at Anyela's vineyards, overlooking beautiful Skaneateles Lake.

After an elegant cocktail hour, guests were treated to Allison and Kevan's friend Chris, singing an acoustic cover for their first dance. It was one of my favorites all year. It's always so personal when a couple asks a friend to play such a pivotal role in their day. The guests loved it!

After an elegant cocktail hour and dinner, I opened the dance-floor and set the party in motion. As usual, I invited Allison and Kevan to request music, and they outlined a great starting point of around 30 songs they love from all Genres. With that and guest requests, I filled in the blanks to create a playlist that kept the dancefloor the 'place to be' all night.

Allison was kind enough to give us the following review:

5.0 out of 5.0
5.0/5.0
  • Quality of Service:  (5.0/5.0)
  • Responsiveness:  (5.0/5.0)
  • Professionalism:  (5.0/5.0)
  • Value:  (5.0/5.0)
  • Flexibility:  (5.0/5.0)

"We planned our wedding from abroad, and Kirk was so flexible and helpful throughout the planning process. The night appeared pretty much seamless with him at the helm, and he was great about addressing a variety of needs/nerves with speeches and toasts. When my now-husband flew back to the states, Kirk went out of his way to meet with him (our only in person meeting before the wedding!). We also had a pretty specific vision for what kinds of music we wanted, and that we wanted a quiet DJ. Kirk 100% lived up to that. There was not a single song played that cleared the dance floor, and Kirk sort of faded into the background except to help with schedule transitions. He was fantastic, so professional, and got rave reviews from our other vendors. He even put up with a slightly intoxicated guest who kept calling him Captain Kirk, which pretty much makes him a hero in my eyes."

Last Dance, Oasis - Wonderwall

I had the pleasure of working with some wonderful vendors as well.  Kate Brown at Lovewell Celebration Design, coordinated the entire day, and photographer Martha Swann captured it all. Combined with the Anyella's, Allison and Kevan were in good hands all the way around.

Thanks Allison and Kevan for letting me be a part of your big day!

Best.

A Rockin, Delicious Dinosaur BBQ Wedding Reception

On Saturday, September 21, I was the luckiest DJ in Syracuse. I had the pleasure of providing services for the wedding reception of Tim and Sarah Fredenburg. Sarah, a well known CNY wedding photographer, professionally uses her maiden name Sarah Heppell. As someone who is active in the local wedding industry, Sarah sees a lot of DJ's, I was honored she chose Select Receptions!

One of the important aspects of Tim & Sarah's big day was personalizing their Grand Entrance and the Wedding Party Introductions. During a client meeting, Tim told me briefly about the ordeal he had "popping the question". The more he told me, the funnier it got, and it really made sense to share this hilarious romantic story with their guests. After welcoming their important guests, and introducing their all important wedding party, I shared with friends and family the touching, funny, and romantic story of Tim, and a ring. A ring he kept in his pocket for an entire week, waiting for just the right moment. With every day, another tacky restaurant, bad desert or pouring rainstorm spoiled the chance at the memorable proposal Sarah deserved. Although the entire story lasted just a few minutes, it showed guests a window into Tim's romantic side, with a lot of laughs.

The night unfolded soon thereafter with lot's of drinking and consuming copious amounts of some the best barbecue in the world. If you're considering a Dinosaur BBQ wedding, pull the trigger and do it!

Tim & Sarah are a fun couple who love funky music, from Cake to the Kool & The Gang, they love to groove. Guests packed the dancefloor early on, and kept it hopping all night long, even forming a Soul Train Line. I had the pleasure of working with Photographer Tom Harmon, and at a later date, may update this post with more of his images.

Thanks again Tim & Sarah! I LOVE you guys and absolutely loved sharing in your day.

Kirk was great. He was flexible about playing the type of music we wanted to hear. I gave him a list of about 12 dance songs we wanted to hear (mostly funky 70's or dancy 80's stuff) and he ran with it, adding his own touch to the selection and providing us with a truly tailored musical experience. He was very good at gauging the room and knew when to switch from eighties dance party to modern club music (when the drinks had coursed through the guests.) Also, Kirk knew how to be a good DJ without attempting to make himself the center of attention, which I think a lot of DJs try to do. He didnt talk too much, just when needed. He was professionally dressed, as was his assistant. Kirk rules.

A Classy, FUN Tug Hill Vineyards Wedding for the books

It's October 7, and although peak wedding season 2013 is slowly but surely winding down, keeping up with blog posts is harder than ever. I don't get a chance to blog about EVERY wedding, but I think this one deserves a mention. On 8/31 I had the honor of helping Erin and Shane Manns celebrate their marriage, at the beautiful Tug Hill Vineyards, in Lowville, NY (A great venue with a staff that's second to none).

Erin and Shane are a great couple, who also happen to be police officers, who met while on duty, at a traffic stop! They were introduced to the "Cops" theme, and walked into the room cuffed to each other!

I had the pleasure of working with photographer Emmanuel Vaucher, whose pictures can be seen in this blog-post, tell the rest of the story.
Needless to say, Erin and Shane's friends and family were a TON of fun. Erin emailed me the following after her wedding:

"I would love to give you a wonderful review.  That evening went off without a hitch and you guys had a huge part in it. I will give Theresa (manager at he vineyard) your contact info, if you don't mind. I'm  trying to get her to put all of our vendors on their list that they hand out to everyone. we had such a blast."

-Erin Barrett

Thanks Erin and Shane! It was a pleasure helping you celebrate your all important day!

A 5 Star Wedding, at Greystone Castle, Canastota, NY

We recently has the honor of providing DJ services for Edward and Abigail Browka's all important day at Greystone Castle in Canastota. For Ed and Abby, we provided on-site ceremony services at their nearby family farm, as well as wireless uplights around the perimeter of the reception room.

For the ceremony, we provided gentle prelude music for guests arriving, and wireless microphones for the officiants & readings. A Harpist from the DeSantis Orchestra provided music for the ceremony itself.

It was a picture perfect ceremony and reception. After a delicious dinner catered by Carnegie Catering (one of my favs!) we slowly faded the warm amber uplighting, over to blue. It was time to party! The warm glow, turned an otherwise cold space, into intimate and elegant all at once.

Because dancing and music was so important to Edward and Abby, instead of being the upper 'loft' area of the room, they preferred to have us directly in front of the dancefloor. The result was awesome sound ON the dance-floor, rather than reverberating around the entire room, as is regularly the case at Greystone.

The floor was PACKED all night, and guests enjoyed an eclectic mix of music from all eras, including lots of current dance music. Edward and Abby were quite the dancers themselves, and they spent most of the evening with their guests, right on the dance-floor.

After their wedding, Edward and Abigail kindly wrote the following review of our services:
"Our wedding was awesome! One of the things that all of our friends and family are saying is that they have never seen a wedding were the dance floor was full from the first dance to the very last. There was artful and skillful flow from song to song, and the mix was fun yet tasteful, young and old alike felt comfortable. The MC introductions and announcements were very professional yet high high energy. One thing that I really liked is that Kirk was an advocate for us (the Bride and Groom) he worked with other vendors to make parts of the night work out well and how WE wanted. Kirk also took time before to really get to know us and help us discern what we really wanted. Our music choice was eclectic (hip hop to polka, country to classical... and Kirk worked with us to make it an awesome night! Also the light show was powerful and fun, and the sound system was clear and powerful, no distortion even when the volume went up toward the end of the night. I interviewed several DJs and Kirk is the rare combination of highly professional and truly fun."

Our dance-lights, lighting up the ceiling
Thanks so much for the kind words, and thanks especially  for entrusting us to carry out your wishes on this HUGELY important day!

Best Wishes!!

A Rockin FUN Sunday Wedding Reception at the Sherwood Inn, Skaneateles, NY

On Sunday, 8/25, I had the pleasure of providing DJ Services for the Skaneateles Wedding of Eric and Sarah Nalbach. Eric and Sarah are from the Buffalo area, but tied the know and celebrated their reception at the Sherwood in in Skaneateles, NY. The Sherwood is a favorite venue for me, as Nadine Duchene, the site coordinator, is an absolute pleasure and a total pro to work with. Eric and Sarah, being in their late 30's, decided they'd like to forego most of the formalities and pomp & circumstance of the more traditional reception events, and instead have a touch of formality, but mostly a fun cocktail and dinner party. The shared with me, that they weren't even considering a DJ in their initial planning. By the end of their wedding reception, Eric shared with me what a mistake that would have been. In their Select Receptions Client Tools account, they picked a ton of great cocktail and dinner music, as they didn't really expect dancing.

After an elegant Cocktail hour and Dinner, we catered to some of the older guests (who would likely leave earliest) with some classic slow-songs.
After enjoying some oldies and slow songs, as expected, many older guests trickled out to head home early (it's Sunday after-all).

It wasn't long before Eric and Sarah's friends were jamming the dance-floor...

One of Eric's long-time friends told me what a club kid Eric was in the early 90's. In no time flat The Sherwood was rocking to classic club tunes and throwback early 90's freestyle music and Old School Hip Hop.

Some of the top classic club songs of the night inlcuded:
* Montel Jordan - This Is How We Do It
* Salt N Pepa - Shoop
* Reel to Reel - I Like To Move It
* Wreckx-N-Effect - Rumpshaker
* Crystal Waters - 100% Pure Love
* Naughty by Nature - O.P.P.
* Snap - I've Got The Power

And many, many more classic bangers.
Peppered in with some Disco Inferno and Old School Michael Jackson, the Eric and Sarah and friends were having a ball, and asked me to stay an additional hour so the party could go on. Unfortunately, because the rooms above the West Porch of the Sherwood were rented to other guests, the music had to stop as scheduled. We ending it with a bang, and received many compliments from all.

What a fun Sunday wedding! Thanks again Eric and Sarah for the great memories. It was an honor to be a part of your big day.

Best Wishes,
Kirk Rothrum

A Soulful, Packed Dancefloor at the Mandana Barn, Skaneateles, NY

On August 24, 2013 we had the pleasure of providing Wedding Reception DJ services for Ashley and Stuart Chesiere. Ashley is from Homer, NY, but she and Stuart current live in Oregon.
Their wedding reception was held at the Mandana Barn, in Mandana, NY (just outside of Skaneateles).

Ashley described herself as being "hipster" with musical tastes that were less than ideal for the average wedding guest. Because most of her guests were family, and on the older side, Ashley decided to avoid most modern music in favor of classic R&B and oldies. We worked together to create a playlist that was exactly as requested, full of great soulful oldies. The result was a dance-floor that was packed ALL night long.

Guests danced to everything from Marvin Gaye, to the Jackson 5, to the Supremes and much more. It was a true anthology of classic, fun soul music from the 60's. As a fairly well-known "vinyl archaeologist" whose been featured in several publications and programs about the culture of record collecting, I know vintage soul music like the back of my hand. Obviously we had to stick to songs guests would recognize, and already know and love... But it was a blast to get to play so much classic soul at a wedding.

Toward the end of the night, as some of the older guests left, Ashley wanted some new music after all... She and her friends had a ball dancing to Miley Cyrus, Soulja Boy, Carly Rae Jepsen and more...

The wedding was truly a success, and guest after guest were kind enough to compliment us and thank us for the most fun they'd had in a long time. Of note, Ashley's parents a generous and thoughtful couple, spent 15-20 minutes after the wedding expressing their sincere thanks and telling us they'd be recommending us to anyone looking for a DJ, as the reception was such a success. That doesn't happen every time, and when it does, it's greatly appreciated. :)

I also had the opportunity to work with one of my favorite photographers in the area, Robert Kaussner!

Thanks Ashley and Stuart, for choosing Select Receptions!

Best,

A Wedding to Remember at Bonnie Castle in Alexandria Bay

Saturday, August 3, 2013, We provided DJ services for the FUN wedding of Nicole and Bill Rafferty.
The reception was held at Bonnie Castle in Alexandria Bay, NY. For cocktails, we transmitted to a wireless speaker on the outdoor deck overlooking the beautiful St. Lawrence river with sweeping views of Boldt Castle. For cocktails Nicole and Bill wanted a good balance of standards and newer music. We created a custom playlist which included everything from Van Morrison, Frank Sinatra and Harry Connick Jr., to Mumford and Sons, The Lumineers, and Philip Phillips. The result was an eclectic mix for all ages. The perfect backdrop to a minging and catching up over drinks on the deck.

After cocktails guests were treated to an exquisite meal, after which, we opened the dance-floor.

Nicole & Bill requested a handful of great songs to get me started, and I filled in the blanks with similar music. The result as a dance-floor that was packed quite literally all night long. Exactly as Bill and Nicole envisioned, we worked our way through the years, starting with some oldies standards for their older guests and family members, then some great 80's tunes that are fitting for all ages.

Later into the evening as their older guests trickled
out, and their friends enjoyed some cocktails, it turned into an all out club.

Things were hopping so much, the Rafferty's decided to extend the reception an additional hour, and I mixed dance & Hip Hop tunes to keep the party at full speed right up to the end.

I received the nicest card and a generous thank you from the Rafferty's recently, and I must say, the pleasure was indeed mine. They're an awesome couple.

Thanks again for a night to remember Bill & Nicole! Your awesome families and friends definitely made my job easier and a lot of fun to rock your party.

Planning Your Wedding Reception Timeline

Your Wedding Timeline is important.

It determines whether or not the reception will flow with forward momentum, making guests feel engaged and having FUN, OR giving them the feeling they’re watching a slow-movie, waiting for the next scene. Guests who are not involved, leave early.

Each wedding reception is unique regardless of the "format" you follow, and it's never etched in stone! You can be traditional -- or deviate from the norm -- whatever best follows your taste. Below, is a sample wedding reception format and sample time-line that works well.

The following suggestions are optional and the order can be changed or events eliminated!

Pic of a Timeline from a Past Wedding
6:00 PM
Cocktail Hour
Your guests arrive at your reception. Upon entering, they are greeted by background music. This combination of the entrance, the decorated reception room, and music will set the first, and lasting, impression. They will mingle and await the arrival of the wedding party.

6:40
Preparing for Introductions

The bridal party arrives at the reception. After any photographs, we’ll help arrange the wedding party into a procession line outside the room, to prepare for introductions. At this time, we’ll ask your guests to make their way to their seats. You can choose to have bride and grooms parents introduced, or if you wish, we can simply acknowledge their presence and introduce them at their tables.

6:50
Introductions
All wedding party members are introduced (by couple) in sequence, with the bride and groom entering last.
The Bride and Groom’s grand entrance!

6:55
First Dance
After introductions is a great time to go right into your First Dance. Your guests are seated with their attention already focused. This is a great “captive” audience. If the dancing and dining are to be done in different rooms, it might be a good idea to do parent dances at this time as well.

7:00
Toasts and any Blessing or Grace
After introductions, the bridal party and newlyweds are seated at the head table, or at their respective tables.
A toast to the Bride and Groom is offered, usually by the best man and/or Maid/Matron of Honor. If dinner is ready, this may be directly followed by a prayer from a family member or a member of the clergy. The bride or groom (or parents) may also have a few words. If a salad is part of the meal, it’s often served to guests during a toast.

7:05
Dinner!
Dinner is served if this is a sit down affair, or the tables are called in sequence for the buffet. In either scenario,  the newlyweds and wedding party are first.

7:40
Tour
Since the Bride and Groom are served first, they are also finished first. Usually, at this time, the Bride and Groom will visit tables and greet their guests, thanking them for coming.

8:00
Father/Daughter and Mother/Son Dances
Because many guests are finishing their meals, and are still at their tables, this is a great time for parent dances. Father/Daughter and Mother/Son dances usually take under 10 minutes. The time for cake cutting and parent dances is often interchangeable. One popular philosophy on this is: Since open dancing will follow, it makes sense to have guests attention focused on the dance-floor and cutting cake first and ending with parent dances allows for this. One 'con' to that is, because Cake Cutting is a fun event, guests are usually out of their seats and eager to take pictures of the Cake Cutting... Regaining their attention, and asking them to be seated again to watch a couple slow dances somewhat takes the wind out of the sails, and reverses any forward momentum.

8:05
Open Dancing
We pick up the pace musically, and open the dance-floor with a “soft” open… This simply means, the music is danceable, more upbeat, and has a bump in volume from the dinner music. It’s not a good idea to expect guests to run out and dance immediately after eating a big meal. This is the time for digesting, coffee, cocktails, mingling, and dancing. Usually, early in the night is when older guests dance, so we read the crowd and play age appropriate music.

Any time from 8:30 - 9:00
Cake Cutting
Cutting the cake only takes 5-10 minutes, and can really happen at any time, but it’s important to consider:
Sometimes older guests leave soon after having cake, so waiting an hour after dinner finishes ensures you get to spend a little more time enjoying their company.
The time for cake cutting and parent dances is often interchangeable, but since guests are seated already after dinner, I think doing Parent Dances after dinner results in a more focused group.

Also, because the cake cutting is a fun tradition, many guests will be out of their seats trying to take photos of the cake cutting. Asking them to return to their seats to watch Parent Dances for another 2 slow songs after cake cutting, from a guest’s perspective, can feel like it slows the momentum of the fun, just when it’s party time.

Any time from 8:35 - 9:00 (After Cake Cutting)
Open Dancing
This is when the party really kicks into gear. The reception fun is in full swing, and will continue throughout the night. Whether your reception is 4 hours, or 5 hours, or more… During this time period, there may be a garter toss, the throwing of the bouquet, Anniversary dance etc. It all depends on your preference.

9:55 or 10:55 Depending on the length of your reception
Last Dance
The last dance of the evening is announced.
The bride and groom may choose to slip away at this point, or stay to say goodbye to their guests.

If there is any special “send off”, it would be announced and coordinated at this time as well.
Please select the traditional formalities you'd like to take place at your Reception.

In Closing...
Flexibility and patience are important. It’s rare that everything happens right on schedule. The important thing is, the bride and groom are able to relax, and enjoy their day as guests of honor, without concern for the time or events.. Your staff of professional vendors should coordinate the details behind the scenes.

As always, don't hesitate to contact me for any reason.

Best Wishes!

A Packed Dancefloor at Bayshore Grove, Oswego, NY

On July 26, 2013, we had a great time providing services for the wedding of Noah and Jillian Alessi. The wedding was held at Bayshore Grove, in Oswego, NY overlooking Lake Ontario. We love the opportunity to work at Bayshore Grove! Sherry and Katie are great to coordinate with and everything flowed as planned. For Noah and Jillian's wedding, we provided ceremony music and wireless microphones for their pastor, and a friend who sang during the ceremony.

Noah and Jillian made a great decision to include a lighting package, and Jillian's choice of plum purple uplighting added the perfect touch. It brought the wedding colors together with the ballroom, and as the sun set, completely transformed the space.

After dinner, the dance-floor was packed ALL NIGHT. Noah and Jillian created a small playlist of favorites, and we filled in the blanks based on their tastes.

We played everything from 80's music to brand new songs.

Top 3 songs of the night were:

1) Daft Punk - Get Lucky

2) Michael Jackson - Billie Jean

3) The Cupid Shuffle

It was a fun wedding with lots of personal and great friends and family having fun!
Thanks for letting me be a part of your big day Noah and Jillian!

A FUN, Personalized Wedding At Emerson Park Pavilion, Overlooking Owasco Lake, Auburn, NY

On July 6, 2013, we had the pleasure of providing wedding reception DJ services for the wedding of Michael and Lauren DeMarchi. The reception took place at the Emerson Park Pavilion, In Auburn, overlooking Owasco lake.

Mike & Lauren's introductions were very grand! We arranged all wedding party members in a hallway on the far end of the room. As each couple was introduced, we had them line up across back of the dance-floor, creating a perfect backdrop for pictures when Mike & Lauren would share their first dance to follow. For introduction music,
Mike & Lauren picked Beyonce - Crazy in Love (a fun upbeat choice). After introducing the wedding party, we asked guests to rise, and after a dramatic pause, gave mike and Lauren the formal, but exciting grand introduction they deserved.

After guests were seated, they shared their first dance, which their wedding party joined in on during the last minute of music. As I cued them to join in, timed specifically to a crescendo in the music, guests applauded and cheered. It was executed perfectly, and is sure to be remembered by all. :)

For an outdoor cocktail hour overlooking the lake, we provided wireless sound transmitted from inside the reception ballroom. At the Emerson Park Pavilion, we placed one elevated 12" speaker far off to one side and out of the way. This can be done anywhere there is electricity (and shelter), within around 90' of the reception hall, and we're glad to include it complementary. Cocktail music is an essential part of a wedding reception.

Mike and Lauren opted for a custom Monogram Projection, which was also a great way to differentiate the 'dance-floor' since the room has all hardwoods, without a specific designated dance-floor. It was a big hit with guests! Visit our Monogram Projection page for more info on adding this unique custom touch.

Assisting with the wedding, was John Parolin, a talented DJ who I've known for years. John has a great ear for music and picking the right song. As soon as the sun set, the dance-floor was packed all night long.

Lauren and Mike had great taste in music. We played all of their favorites, while strictly adhering to their Do-Not-Play list as well. Carrying out their wishes is an important part of creating a wedding reception that is personal and unique!

It was a pleasure working with Tim Capwell, the Site Coordinator at the Emerson Park Pavilion, as well as Kevin Knieriem, a photographer from Buffalo, NY, whose images can be seen above.

Best,
-Kirk Rothrum

An Intimate Private Estate Wedding in Skaneateles, NY

Last week, on June 29, 2013, I had the pleasure of providing DJ services for the wedding of Carrie and David Van Epps. They're a couple from the Charlotte, NC area, who traveled to Skaneateles to wed at the home of David's father, Dale. It's sometimes difficult to think of central or upstate New York as a place for a "destination wedding", but I've seen many! With a beautiful backdrop like Skaneateles Lake, it just makes sense.

Because of rain, the ceremony was delayed 15 minutes. Though the ground was a little soggy, some of their closest friends and family gathered around for a beautiful ceremony performed by Skaneateles Justice Kathy Dell, who I've worked with in the past.

After 2 moving toasts and a delicious dinner, Carrie and David shared their first dance together. Then the party really started! I was initially concerned that the overcast skies and earlier rain would out a damper on things, but they didn't at all. The patio turned into a packed dance-floor, with guests staying until the very last song.

I had the pleasure of working with photographer Caitlyn Bom, as well as Massachusetts wedding planner Shannon Meneses.

Thanks David and Carrie! I wish you and your family a lifetime of happiness!
