Gearing Up for a Great Season Ahead!

After a month long break from blogging, I decided to post an update, looking to the future. The past few months of the "off season" are full of non-wedding DJ highlights. Aside from meeting with many couples planning their wedding, I've had fun DJing everything from corporate Christmas parties, to benefits for Habitat for Humanity, and many club gigs. The club work has tough hours, but it's fun packing a dance-floor.

We booked a wedding at Greystone Castle, and the groom wondered if I could *mix* music. He read the "About Us" page, and mentioned seeing me in a "How to Pick Your Wedding DJ" video featured on youtube, and commented that I was well-spoken and professional. After a couple minutes of feeling me out, I let him know where my roots are. In a nutshell, I began with 2 turntables and cut my DJ teeth mixing crates of records, (which I still have a wall of). I never impose any music style on anyone's day, ever. That said, when I'm playing a set of modern music and your dance-floor is packed, beat-mixing is imperative to keep things flowing. When the end of one song seamlessly transitions into the next, creating an on-the-spot remix, it energizes the dance-floor, rather than the usual "downer" when a great song ends. My client knew it, he just wasn't sure how to ask :).

That's a good example of why during off-wedding season, working in bars and clubs here & there is important. Many of my clients envision an evening that will begin as an elegant cocktail hour, turn to a classy dinner party, and (later) after the cake is cut and grandma goes home... It's the Bride & Groom, and a bunch of their closest friends & family with an open bar and their own DJ! Time to party! The Chicken Dance is usually not part of their vision. Their actual favorite music is.

Best of luck with your planning.
